The role of a nutritional therapist is to educate. Having gone through a thorough medical questionnaire, your diet and lifestyle will be analysed in great detail. You will be provided with a great deal of information so that you understand exactly what body systems are in need of support and how to implement necessary changes in order to regain balance.
For example, in cases of high cholesterol, a doctor would prescribe an appropriate medication to stop the body producing cholesterol. In naturopathic therapy, we pay more attention to the pathology that produces the particular symptom, in this case having high cholesterol. The pathologies that can lead to high cholesterol include poor thyroid function, intestinal permeability, disrupted gut microbiome, chronic viral or bacterial infections, insulin and leptin resistance, and nutrient imbalances- to name a few. Dealing with a high cholesterol patient, we will examine all of these potential pathologies, and of course we will also look at how the individual's diet, lifestyle, genetics an other factors may be contributing to them. Once we have addressed all of the core pathologies, the cholesterol levels typically normalize on their own.
Lifelong practices of suppressing symptoms will only mask the underlying imbalances/problems and eventually lead to degenerative disease. It may take years or even decades for them to develop, consequently when you get sick, you can’t expect the body to heal overnight. The healing process will often take diligence, hard work, a great deal of willpower, and real commitment.
If you are looking for a quick fix, instant reduction in symptoms, and are not interested in helping the body heal, nutritional therapy will not be able to help you. Prevention of a disease is always easier than treatment. There will never be a better time than now to begin working towards a longer and healthier life.
